Real life data centered ICT solutions need to be solved with all kinds of different expertises. So for this challenge, the AUAS( Hogeschool van Amsterdam) combines aspects of business relevance, data, security and cloud deployment in order to produce a minimal viable product.
In this challenge, bachelor students work on the challenge from different angles, like security, data and cloud deployment. The solutions will be practically relevant and supported by needed documentation and tutorials. They will be supported by lecturers from the Amsterdam University of Applied Science (Hogeschool van Amsterdam). The semester is scheduled year around, so additional increments can be implemented in sequential semesters if a product owner likes to continue the collaboration.
To fit into the overall policy of the university a challenge should either have a sustainablity aspect or a diversity aspect.
✅ Key features of the challenge
Program: Bachelor ICT
Course: Combination of the minor Big Data and the minor Cloud Solutions
Students per team: 4-5 students. Most of the time, it makes sense to assign 2 groups of students to a challenge, since in the beginning multiple options need to be explored
Number of hours spent per team: 4-5 * 200 hours = 800-1000 hours (this is the total amount of hours spent by all team members)
Duration: January 24 - May 25
Supervision: Student teams are supervised and guided by senior lecturers.
Deliverables: Depending on the wishes of the product owner it could be an advise report with recommendations, a dashboard to analyze all kinds of business data, findings on data analysis itself, Proof of Concept of implementations of a solution in the Cloud, a prototype or a Minimal Viable Product. If needed it will include documenbtation for technical installation, hand over or a user manual.
Company time investment: a minimum of 8-12 hours in total e.g. kick-off meeting, midterm presentation and final presentation. Both depending on the availability of the product owner and the challenge itself more periodical moments of intervention can be discussed.

The student teams can work on challenges like, but not limited to, the following:
Setting up dashboards for comparing and analyzing data from different sources and API's, ranging from sport organizations to retail companies
Setting up a secure webshop on Google Cloud Platform for a start up
Comparing costs and performance for image recognition of predictive maintenance using locally trained models versus AI services in the Cloud
Improving existing deployment to AWS in a cost effective way for a company handling sensor data
Building dashboards for monitoring large volumes of data, say 1 GB per day, for analyzing sensor data or log files for large production systems
Building dashboards where API's from third party software ( CRM / ERP) are involved
Some examples of a project we don't support would
Building a fancy out of the box look-a-like webshop
Commercial webshop with social media integration
Working on highly sensitive data of minors
🏢 Company requirement
Any company (startup/scale-up/corporate/incubator/NGO) with at least two founders/employees working full time in the company.
In business for at least 6 months.

🗓 Planning
The semester consists of 20 weeks starting from the beginning of January 2025. Students will get -23 weeks of onboarding and after those weeks they start working on the challenge. So ideally, the kick off is scheduled somewhere at the end of september.
